fly out fishing & moose hunting trips

Red Lake, Ontario, Canada

The Carlsons: Outfitting Remote Fishing Trips since 1947.

Arthur Carlson (1907-1997) explored Woodland Caribou Park 55 years before it was designated a park. He immigrated from Sweden in 1928 looking for a wilderness adventure and he became part of the Red Lake Gold rush. In 1929 on Douglas Lake, Arthur spent a hard winter. He would get up and check the rabbit snares to determine whether there would be breakfast that day. In 1947, after years of hunting, prospecting and trapping near the headwaters of the Gammon River, Arthur with his wife Florence decided to construct a remote fishing resort on Douglas Lake. As pioneers in this business, they invented and built a camp with advice from their longtime guests. During the 1950's Arthur also began running guided canoe trips down the Gammon River to Manitoba. For a man who had won the canoe races at Red Lake's July 1st Celebrations for a number of years, this was a natural progression.

Where it all began...

Viking Outposts Today...

Art and Florence, our parents, started serving the fly-in sportsman in 1947. They built a small resort, Viking Island on Douglas Lake, that Hugh and Enid still operate.

In the late 1960’s, we took over the outpost portion of the business and have expanded the operation to include 12 outposts and originally operated 2 aircraft privately to ensure a high level of personal service to our guests. In the early 1990’s we began our own air charter service.

Today we operate 4 aircraft primarily for our own guests. We are proud of our on time departures, always weather permitting of course. Together we have operated Viking Outposts for over 40 years and maintain a keen watch over the outpost operation. We both regularly fly into the outposts so are always aware of what needs to be done, making sure equipment is working well and guests are happy. We often give advice on fishing techniques and the possible location of hot spots. We feel as pilots going to the camps, we can better ensure customer satisfaction. We are always happy to deliver that surprise birthday cake or extra case of beer that is a small effort but large in customer appreciation.

Let us help plan your next trip.

Sincerely, Hugh and Craig
