Fly to Viking Island Lodge Viking Island is a small resort dedicated to fishing. It takes a short flight by float plane to reach Douglas Lake from Red Lake. Now you are in Woodland Caribou Wilderness Park. This is beautiful remote country, renowned for walleye, northern and lake trout fishing as well as wildlife viewing. The lakes are deep, but not huge, and closely connected with plenty of bays. The perfect setting for a relaxed fishing trip. The atmosphere on the island comes from another time. We have a maximum of 24 guests in camp per week and many have been visiting us for many years. A Group of 12 to 24 people can book the Whole Island Click here for details
Harriet filmed her Dad and the Norseman this spring and we hope to use the film at the sports shows this winter. Harriet and Hugh filming inside the Norseman Norseman CF-FQI at Viking Island The Crew Douglas Lake Click on the map for a larger version.
Our Lodge The lodge is where visiting happens and meals served. Here a wood cook stove with a simmering soup pot and the smell of rising bread dough reminds guests of grandma's kitchen. The kitchen is open to the guests and part of the casual atmosphere. Guests gather in the lodge or out on the large deck to visit. We have high speed internet and phone via satellite. Donna and Eddie can always be found to provide help or advice. Dining at the Lodge You will experience our great Canadian home cooking which can be traced to the varied cultures of this area. Recipes originate from the Oji-Cree, Swedish, French Canadian, Polish and Canadian people of this area. Ingredients include wild rice, blueberries and, sometimes, your own fish. Over a hearty breakfast, guests discuss and plan the days adventure. Lunch can be a bowl of soup at the lodge, a picnic on the shoreline, or fresh walleye cooked over a fire; your choice. Supper is an event. It is served buffet style with plenty of seconds available. Some of the cabins were carefully built by Arthur Carlson from local trees. He was a master craftsman with a passion for the wilderness. Today each cabin is a clean cozy retreat from the noisy, modern world. Each has a peaceful view, a wood heater and propane lights; the simple luxuries of life. Linen and towels are provided. Two modern cabins have bedrooms, bathrooms and a meeting area; perfect for larger groups. The camp is powered with a combination of propane, solar power and a backup generator. This is carefully planned to provide a pleasant atmosphere with an emphasis on the beauty and sounds of nature. There is no better stress reliever than the cry of a loon as the sun sets or the dance of northern lights during the quiet and darkness of night. .
